Experience HUD and Stat Usage

Our HUD

Wailing Rock uses an experience HUD that auto-attaches when you arrive on the sim (conversely, it auto-detaches when you leave us). When you first arrive, the HUD will attach and you will be prompted to create a character. You will need to set your name, and pick a race. Then you're ready to go! The only thing to remember is that our channel is '/2' for IC emotes.

Experience

There are three ways to earn experience points (XP) in Wailing Rock:

1. Being present in Wailing Rock. The HUD awards a small amount of XP for being on-sim.

2. Submitting roleplay. All roleplay submissions are worth approximately one (1) XP for each hour of roleplay. Roleplay submissions are reviewed regularly, but please allow Sim Support up to five (5) days for review and reward.

3. Events. Roleplayers that attend events are awarded XP at the end of each event. Again, roleplayers should submit attendance through the Roleplay submission form, here on our website.

Please note, any roleplay that takes place outside of Wailing Rock will not count toward XP. In addition, please do not submit ERP for XP.

Stats

Stats are worth 10 XP; meaning, for every 10 XP you earn on sim, you are awarded one (1) stat, to spend on Strength, Dexterity, or Intellect.

Base character Stats are as follows:

Strength

Strength measures your character’s muscle and physical power. This ability is especially important in close-quarters fighting because it helps a player prevail in combat.

You apply a character's Strength modifier to:

  • Melee attack rolls

  • Damage rolls when using a melee weapon or a throwing weapon

  • Climbing, jumping or swimming

  • Breaking down doors, smashing objects, etc

Dexterity

Dexterity measures hand-eye coordination, agility, reflexes, and balance.

You apply your character’s Dexterity modifier to:

  • Ranged attack rolls, including those for attacks made with guns and other ranged weapons

  • Reactive reflexes, for avoiding attacks that you can escape by moving quickly

  • Balance, escaping, hiding, moving silently, picking locks, etc.

Intellect

Intelligence determines how well your character learns and reasons. It also describes a character’s willpower, common sense, perception, and intuition.

You apply a character's Intellect modifier to:

  • Casting, to include spells, charms and area-of-effect (AOE) spells

  • Healing yourself, another player, or a group of players

  • Will saving - negating the negative effects of other spells

  • Deciphering, disabling devices, forgery, and knowledge

Sanity

Sanity determines semi-permanent illness (this stat will only be drawn upon/deducted from in sim-wide instances)

Keep in mind, this is just a short, comprehensive example of the various ways your character may use their stats in Wailing Rock. If you're still in doubt, here's a look at stats, as explained with tomatoes:

  • Strength is being able to crush a tomato

  • Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato

  • Intellect is knowing that a tomato is a fruit

  • Sanity is knowing that tomatoes are real

Dice Fighting and You: A Comprehensive Guide

1. Do not break the three Golden Rules of Roleplay:

a) NO GODMODDING
b) NO METAGAMING
c) NO POWERGAMING

2. In Wailing Rock, we have a HUD with a D100 built in... but players are also welcome to use free-form. If both players agree to free-form, great! But if one player does not agree and prefers dice, then it is either automatically a dice fight or you both must walk away to prevent OOC fighting.

3. To begin a fight, all parties MUST roll initiative. This is done by simply clicking the dice HUD and watching the local chat for your outcome. In Wailing Rock, it will look something like this:

[18:19] Wailing Rock GPHUD: Bob rolled 9

4. Once initiative is rolled, more parties may not join without consent from everyone involved in the fight OOCly. If all parties agree, then proceed to join the post order for the fight. If someone does not permit you joining the fight, you need to wait your turn or walk away.

5. Wailing Rock observes a POST then ROLL order. Once initiative is rolled, the attacker posts their attempted attack, rolls. Defender rolls first to see if they dodge it or get hit so their post can encompass their dodge or hit, then in the same post after whatever happens, they do their attack attempt and roll and it continues on (this is explained in more detail below).

6. To integrate stats (Str/Dex/Int) into a fight, Wailing Rock keeps it simple: To use your stats, use the flat roll and type your reason for roll, plus stat, into the text box. For example:

[18:20] Wailing Rock GPHUD: rolled 1d100 for RAWR! (+9 str), and rolled 26

The roll is thus 26+9, thus making it total of 35.

NOTE: When is initiative not needed? Surprise attacks. If you're an assassin, it would be a little weird for the person you are about to jump attack first when they haven’t been attacked yet. Just common sense. We do, however, urge you to ask for consent OOCly to ‘surprise attack’. Refer to the Golden Rules!

7. You CANNOT force a person into a fight if they OOCly wish to opt out. On the flip side, this is not something to hide behind if you wish to go around insulting people or causing trouble. Expect people to react - no excuses.

Additionally, if you are in a situation that you are unable to resolve with free-form or dice, and can't reach an agreement OOCly, you are welcome to "fade to black" (or FTB) from a scene. This is also acceptable if you need to leave suddenly. However, if you are uncomfortable in any situation, please contact Sim Support that we may help you resolve any issues or concerns.

Wailing Rock will be hosting an underground fighting ring knows as the Dead Ringer's Club. This is an excellent opportunity for you to come and learn the basics, and to put what you've learned into practice. Watch the group notices for announcements, and roleplay accordingly! Additionally, Sim Support will be offering classes. Again, watch for group notifications. Not only will this help you understand the basics of dice fighting, but you'll earn XP!

Now that we've got the basics down, let's take a look at what a fight might actually look like!

Example: Two players, Joe and Bob, preparing to fight at the Dead Ringer's Club.

1. Both players roll Initiative:

[18:19] Wailing Rock GPHUD: game player Joe rolled 9
[18:20] Wailing Rock GPHUD: game player Bob rolled 6

2. Joe won the roll; Joe gets to post attack first. The attacker posts their attempted attack, rolls. Defender rolls first to see if they dodge it or get hit so their post can encompass their dodge or hit, then in the same post after whatever happens, they do their attack attempt and roll and it continues on. It would look something like this:

BOB: "Bob charged forward, fists in front of him. As he closes the distance between himself and Joe, he strikes forward with his closed fist, and if his punch finds its target, will hit Joe squarely in the chin."

[18:24] Wailing Rock GPHUD: game player Bob rolled 7
[18:25] Wailing Rock GPHUD: game player Joe rolled 4

((JOE LOSES THE ROLL, WHICH MEANS HE TAKES THE PUNCH. HE WILL POST ACCORDINGLY, AND IN THE SAME POST, TAKES HIS CHANCE AT ATTACK))

JOE: ((PART ONE)) "Joe had been standing there with a smirk on his face, and he saw Bob's fist coming at him just a second too late; he tried to dodge it but failed, and was knocked back at the force of Bob's fist hitting his chin. ((PART TWO)) Shaking it off as best he could, he bent at the waist and charged forward. If he was fast enough, he would land a blow directly to Bob's midsection.

[18:28] Wailing Rock GPHUD: game player Joe rolled 4
[18:29] Wailing Rock GPHUD: game player Bob rolled 8

((BOB WINS THE ROLL, WHICH MEANS HE DODGES THE ATTACK, AND IN THE SAME POST, TAKES HIS CHANCE AT ATTACK))

BOB: ((PART ONE)) "Bob had been watching Joe intently, and when he saw Joe darting forward, he quickly sprung out of the way and crouched low, thrusting his leg out and spinning. ((PART TWO)). If he's fast enough, it will sweep Joe's legs out from underneath him."

[18:33] Wailing Rock GPHUD: game player Bob rolled 8
[18:34] Wailing Rock GPHUD: game player Joe rolled 9

Any questions or issues, or even suggestions, please contact Sim Support. Thank you and good luck out there!
