The Vessel

Ina Williams, nothing too special about her, at least that is what she would have told you back when she was 18. Hailing from Viroqua, Wisconsin in Vernon County with a population of maybe 4,500 people total she was just another face in a rural town. It was one of those towns that more or less shunned Walmart and other big corporations, catering more to the mom and pop type businesses. Outside of the downtown proper were rolling fields and farmland as far as the eye could see. Growing up in a more farming lifestyle she was expected to take over and continue on with the family farm, along with her three brothers and two sisters. Ina had other plans though, opting to go to college in an effort to find something that interested her more than getting her hands dirty and waking up at the butt-crack of dawn every morning.
The first step was simple enough, her parents were excited about her wanting to get an education and didn’t question her starting classes at the local university. Ina was set on using school as an excuse to not have to work on the farm, opting to double major rather than focus on one subject. She came to an interesting combination, aiming for a bachelors of law as well as a bachelors of biology. She soon found herself engrossed in school, finding those classes relating to biology particularly enjoyable. At 22 she held in her hands two bachelors degrees and now she had to make a decision, the one she’d been aiming for in the first place. Where did she want to go to take law school? Anywhere that wasn’t here sat fine with her and with the way businesses were treated in Viroqua she had more than enough in funding.
After a search of law schools quite literally as far away from Wisconsin as she could find she sent out her applications and waited. Of course the typical high ranking and well known schools were full up and she was left grabbing at strings, hoping for anything. She was about to throw in the towel when a letter came, from Oregon of all places. One of the off shoot way out there Law Schools she’d applied for had actually replied with an acceptance letter and it was in Portland, a place she’d heard so much about. After a heated discussion with her parents she was on her way, driving across country with what meager belongings she had. Lewis and Clark Law School had sounded like a joke at first but she came to find that the school was in fact real and the classes she took for the next three years were anything but easy.
A year on her own after completing law school had her interning at various firms until people took note of her drive and passion for law. This led to her gaining more time in courtrooms, watching and observing, learning everything she could. She had become blind to the danger of the profession, seeing only right and wrong as put forth by the law. Which would ultimately be her downfall. After winning a case on a particularly messy trial she was on cloud nine. She was actually doing this, the furthest thing from farming that she ever could have hoped for. It was that mindset that had her missing the way a car followed her. It had her missing the ominous feeling as she rounded a corner and said vehicle stopped. The men that came after her were quiet, stealthy in a way or perhaps she just wasn’t paying attention.
And so she’s laying there in an alley, fallen onto a pile of trash bags with gods knew what, clutching at her stomach trying desperately to hold the wound shut. Too much blood, it was around her, soaking through her clothes, making her fingers stick together. The smell of it was something she’d only ever imagined ever being metallic and like what they describe in horror movies. She was cold all over, breathes coming out in shaky and erratic puffs. Everything was dark, bleeding into her vision when a voice cooed at her, “Oh you poor thing. What a shitty way to die.” A hand moved through her hair, pushing the strands back to uncover her face and the trickle of blood at the corner of her mouth, “Are you really going to die here in this alley, so far from home and too some worthless pieces of shit that couldn’t even do it quickly?” Perhaps she was already gone, the voice seeming too sweet to be real after what she’d been through, her head weakly shaking back and forth. A cough leaving more blood splattering down her chin, “No...I...help me. Please.” A soft chuckle above her before a light sigh and then that hand was moving to cup her cheek, “Oh honey. I’ll help you but you need to help me in return. Can you do that?” She was already nodding her head, agreeing to anything if it meant saving her own life, “Yes, anything. I’ll help you. Please just, I can’t die here.”
“Very well.” It was the last thing she heard before there was pain, worse pain than she’d ever felt and that was just after being stabbed multiple times. There was pain and then nothing. She woke, blinking rapidly before taking in her surroundings to see a female figure seated at the edge of her bed. Her bed? She was, they were in her home, not a thing out of place aside from the figure seated before her. The figure turned to her, a light smile on her lips, “Oh you’re awake finally.” She was moving, running her hands over her stomach and moving away the blankets to reveal unblemished skin. “How? I mean thank you I can’t..you saved me. I don’t know how I can ever repay you.” The woman grinned, leaning forward for a moment before shrugging, “You promised to help me in return. So I couldn’t just let your body go to waste.” A confused look crossed Ina’s face before the woman continued, “So, seeing as you are better now. I guess it’s my turn to ask a favor, hmm? How about...we team up. I help you find those bastards and do away with them and you help me stay here.”
Ina was confused for a moment before nodding, “Yes, of course. I can help you with that.” The woman was already moving forward, practically crawling over Ina’s body to pin her to the bed, their faces a mere breath away from one another, “Then let us seal the deal.” The woman’s eyes flickering from Ina’s eyes to her lips and back again. It didn’t take long for Ina to catch on before she was leaning up, pressing her own lips against the woman’s and sighing into their kiss. And before she knew it, the woman was gone, vanished from before her and nowhere in sight. The only thing she knew was she felt more powerful, stronger and more determined, so much so that the little voice that whispered in her ear didn’t bug her at all. Somehow she knew, whether it was knowledge given to her by the woman or by some other means, she knew. That woman was a part of her now. Forever.

The Demon
Irreth is a more cunning demon than one might originally think, sure being a subordinate of Mammon could be trying at times but it did have it’s perks. For instance while most saw Mammon’s realm, Greed, as a material thing he allowed more free reign over the area so long as you were doing your primary job and corrupting. Perhaps he had a soft spot for Irreth or perhaps she was just really good at manipulating, whatever the reason she was allowed more free reign than most others under his charge.
You see Irreth wasn’t born a demon, she didn’t come into being suddenly to serve a purpose. She was born a human, a witch no less, back when it was unheard of and rather dangerous. She’d always been connected to greed in one fashion or another, whether it be her greed for knowledge or magical power, it had always been a part of her character. See back when Irreth was alive and human there was a saying as to what happened when witches died, a belief rather. You could either choose to pass on, become one with the earth and live on eternally in that form or you could become a corrupter. Witches don’t have souls so they are seen as particularly useless in heaven, no soul to salvage and turn into an angel in their legion of do-gooders. So at the start Irreth was shunned from Heaven, maybe that’s why she chose to become a corrupter. Or maybe it had been the way she’d been burned at the stake that really drove her into the profession. Regardless she was the first of her kind to come to Mammon, on her knees before him begging him to send her back so she could destroy the ones that condemned her.
Taking a liking to her passion he had agreed and made her one of his legion. She has a particular dislike for witches in general but that’s only because now they are afforded souls, allowed to be ‘saved’ and sent to Heaven on death. It’s more or less become her mission now to touch and corrupt as many of them as she can, just because she was not granted that chance. Not like she’d go to Heaven willingly anyway, she’s having too much fun.
Not only that but her current vessel is quite the lively one, so full of passion and hatred hidden deep inside her. She felt like a kindred spirit in a way, seeing her memories and where she’d come from the similarities were striking. The woman had been greedy, wanting more from her life than her family, actually at times looking down on her family because of what she’d accomplished. That greed for knowledge and power simply to have it was a full course meal for Irreth. To her surprise though, when she’d finally sealed the deal and moved to inhabit Ina’s body the woman was still there. They carry on conversations out of eye sight within Ina and slowly they’d come to a mutual agreement. Ina would continue on living until her life became too boring for her with Irreth along for the ride, coming and going as she pleased. It was not often that you found such a willing host, let alone a host that actually knew what was going on and accepted it. The agreement though was one she’d requested from Mammon, upon Ina’s death she would become like Irreth and the two would be allowed to work together corrupting. It was an odd request but it was eventually allowed. The deal was made and Irreth had come to find out just how cunning and manipulative Ina could be, drawing people in and giving Irreth free reign to do her work without so much as blinking. Perhaps Irreth would keep Ina alive for a while...
Regardless she couldn’t be seen in Oregon anymore so they ventured north into Washington. Oh the adventures they were about to have.

Journal entry - 28 August 2014
So it's been exactly a year since the incident. My murder. Well almost murder. It's been weird, different. Your perspective on life and people really does change when you come to your last moments. I'd always thought of myself as a good person, I went to church every Sunday with my family back when I lived in Wisconsin. I can barely remember what the inside of a church looks like anymore, it's been..years.
As it turns out though the 'almighty' doesn't answer prayers, doesn't save lives. He lets them slip away, like he was going to do with mine. That is until Irrie came and found me. I of course don't know her full name, it's better for us both if I don't. She did confess to me something I found rather funny though, normal possessions don't work like ours. I don't even think you can call what we have a possession, it's more like just sharing a house. We have a shared lease on my body.
It was actually her idea, that I start writing things down in case I start to forget. It's not unheard of and she claims she likes how we work together. She leaves me little notes anytime she takes full control, if you can even call it that. More than anything she explained that she can block out certain things, things that would be hard for my human brain to comprehend. It's a courtesy. I did request one thing from her though, once we find the people that did this to me, I'm allowed to watch and maybe even participate. I was actually so set on taking them to trial for attempted murder but Irrie talked me out of it. Said what would stop them from trying what they tried all over again. Her specific words were that they didn't deserve a trial, they'd signed their death warrants the second they tried to kill me. I kind of agree with her now.
The search is ongoing, we have their names and faces but she insists we lay low, they still believe I'm dead. I took time off work, they agreed to keep it quiet. At this point it's like being in a witness protection program of sorts. A statement was released from my firm stating that they were sad to see such a young lawyer gone so soon. They worded it like that specifically to make it sound like I was dead, for my protection. It'll be better that way, makes it easier to surprise them. A few more months and we'll have enough information to lure them out and take them out once and for all. After that we leave from here, get out of this state and start over. That's the plan.
